…IMCO lighters are more reliable, don’t leak, actually stay lit in wind, and cost less. I have one that my grandfather picked up “over there” nearly ninety years ago that still gets the job done.
If I have any complaint at all, it’s that the things chew up flints pretty quickly. In exchange, however, you get one heck of a spark that fires the wick first time, every time.

This is a pipe lighter–it has a removable “fuel tank” with which you can light a pipe (or campfire–anything that requires “distance” from your hand and the ability to tip the flame like a candle). It is windproof, as long as you have the “chimney slide” type thing choked up and the wick trimmed. It is remarkably fuel-efficient, due to its unique fuel tank cap and built-in snuffer that seals around the top of the tank when closed. It is lightweight. I think it’s either made of steel or tin, but whatever it is, it’s light.
It is easily maintained–all you ever have to do is replace the flints (and wicks, periodically. It accepts Zippo brand wicks in a pinch). Replacing the flints is much easier than it is on a Zippo; all you have to do is press on the release catch on the bottom and swing out the innards, which remain in one piece (no stupid tiny little screws to lose).
Using it always seems to impress friends and coworkers–it just has a neat, swing-out ignition method that always catches people’s attention. So if you want to look cool, buy these lighters.
CONS:
It rusts easily if exposed to water and not dried thoroughly.
It has “poky” corners that can be uncomfortable and can tear holes in thin pockets.
If it gets soaked in a stream, it won’t work till you let it dry out completely, and then it will probably only work for a little while due to the fluid being washed out/diluted by the water.

While convenient for many, and lucrative for the manufacturers (and shareholders,) the disposable lighter is an appalling waste of energy and materials. I bought one of these a few weeks ago after tiring of throwing out the disposables. Now the only consumables are the flints and the fluid.
As for the design, it is almost perfect. I find it particularly neat that you can pull the reservoir out of the housing to use as a candle, and the striking mechanism is brilliant as well. One minor complaint is that the flimsy adjustable wind shield got loose and eventually fell off; it seems to be something of an afterthought. For such a low price, however, this is not a big deal.

the price of 8 dollars was very inexpensive for a lighter so i didn’t really exspect to much. i read the reviews and most seemed to like the lighter. i have colleced lighteer for years, from surf board lighters to world war 1 trench lighters. this lighter is differant then any other one i have, the side flips up for the flint to go into and the flame pulls out on the bottom to light a candle or cigar. i wish they had raised the price even by 10 dollars and made it out of a silver, copper, or any stronger metal rather then tin. it has the feel of a flimsy lighter but it has not broken even after neing dropped and used a lot. this lighter is worth the money and i would buy another if i ever lost this one. it wa shipped on time and with no problem buy it without any worries.

Fantastic. A beautiful piece of mechanical engineering. Disposable lighters have about as much class and style as a plastic cup, but an Imco lighter is a classic. When’s the last time your lighter was a conversation piece?! Plus, refilling the fluid and changing flints is fun.
Way cool, better than a Zippo, and makes a lot more environmental sense than disposables. Plus, it’s something you can buy that isn’t made in China. The Chinese have ripped off the design and make crummy copies sold on Ebay. Spend the extra couple of bucks to get a quality Austrian product.
It’s a great camping/fireplace lighter. Windproof, and you can pull out the bullet-shaped reservoir once it’s lit and use it like a little candle to light fires.
